To empower green transition to mobile; GSMA launches new innovation fund

The GSMA Innovation Fund for Green Transition for Mobile has launched to provide grants and technical assistance to small and growing enterprises that leverage mobile and digital technologies to improve digital inclusion and climate action.

Three billion people – 38 per cent of the world’s population – live in areas covered by mobile internet but yet not using it due to barriers such as limited digital literacy and skills, lack of relevant content, online safety concerns, and insufficient access.

Persistent gaps in access to reliable electricity across many markets limit individuals and communities from charging devices, which in turn restricts their ability to access online services and participate in other energy‑dependent economic activities. Additionally, handset affordability is often recognised as the most significant barrier preventing people from getting online.

The GSMA Innovation Fund for Green Transition for Mobile aims to address this by supporting startups utilising mobile and digital technologies, including AI, to improve digital inclusion and climate action. These may be digital solutions that improve access to clean, reliable energy, particularly in underserved areas, or solutions that advance device circularity, reduce value-chain emissions, and improve handset affordability.
